ACIAR - Philippines Horticulture Program
This is a multidisciplinary program for the vegetable and fruit industries in the Philippines that was identified during ACIAR's country consultation in March 2006. Follow up consultations were later organised by ACIAR in June and September 2007 involving Australian and Filipino horticulture stakeholders, respectively, that led to the development of two programs, HORT/2007/066: Enhanced profitability of selected vegetable value chains in the southern Philippines and Australia and HORT/2007/067: Improved domestic profitability and export competitiveness of selected fruit value chains in the Philippines. These programs were officially launched in Davao City, Philippines last July 2008.
The horticulture program involves four ACIAR research areas (Agricultural Systems Management, Horticulture, Soil Management and Crop Nutrition, and Policy Linkages and Impact Assessment) and links more than 55 researchers from over 27 multi-sectoral organisations in the Philippines and Australia. These horticultural initiatives were developed to contribute to the economic growth of the Philippines through increased income and improved livelihoods of high-value vegetable and tropical fruit growers in the southern Philippines. Each initiative consists of six components that look into specific commodities and R&D priority issues as identified by stakeholders during the consultation:
