MR141207: Australia’s Statement on Typhoon Hagupit

STATEMENT ON TYPHOON RUBY

Australian Ambassador Bill Tweddell

On behalf of the Australian Government and people, I offer our heartfelt sympathies to the communities affected by Typhoon Hagupit (locally known as Typhoon Ruby).

Australia, as a close friend of the Philippines, welcomes initial reports that preparedness by communities and local and national governments has helped limit the impact on lives and property.

While the full effect of the typhoon is yet to be determined, we are already working closely with the Philippine Government and our network of humanitarian partners to obtain information on emergency operations and needs.

In the past year, I have travelled extensively in the affected area and seen first-hand the relief and recovery operations still under way following Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). The recovery from Typhoon Hagupit (Ruby) will once again require a coordinated response from local authorities and international partners.

Australia extends its solidarity to our friends at this difficult time and stands ready to provide assistance if required.
